about the ride

With the last edition in 2017 (cancelled in 2018 and 2019 due to inclement weather, then 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic), the Okutama Hillclimb is back! It may be an early morning, but it’s true what they say about the early bird gets the worm! The Okutama Shuyu Road will be closed for this event – a special treat considering the popularity of this road with motorbikes.

As its name suggests, the Tokyo Hillclimb Series – Okutama Stage is a part of several hill climb challenges around Tokyo. Taking place on the well-paved roads of Okutama, up to 400 hill climb specialists and recreational cyclists will gather at the westernmost tip of Tokyo. On the course, you’ll be surrounded by the magnificent mountains of Okutama and enjoy spectacular views of Lake Okutama. With nature so abundant, you’ll marvel at how the vibrant green surroundings feel worlds apart from the concrete jungles of metropolitan Tokyo.

Once a toll road, the Okutama Shuyu Road became a public road in April 1990; the road surfaces and surrounding woods are carefully maintained by the Nishitama Construction Office of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Construction throughout the year, making it one of the finest hillclimb stages in the Tokyo Hillclimb series.

Known by local Tokyo residents as a popular resort area for urbanites seeking nature’s refuge, the Okutama area is located on the western edge of Tokyo and touch both Yamanashi and Kanagawa Prefectures.

In it to win it! Consider yourself a fast cyclist? Expert climber? Finish within the top 50 men or top 10 women and win ¥10,000.
