about the ride

Your bike deserves a vacation! Ride past lush shades of greens and blue with Tour de Nippon this fall at Izu Ichi – Cycling Around Izu Peninsula. From the coastal roads to mountain paths, there’s no better way to weave through the Izu Peninsula than on a bicycle! No matter the distance you choose, don’t forget to indulge yourself in fresh seafood, relax in hot spring baths, and recover amidst nature’s abundance!

Famous for hot spring resorts, rugged coastlines, and sandy beaches, Izu is a popular getaway for city dwellers and cyclists. Renown as a vacation hotspot, you’ll never want to leave Izu’s serene outdoors and diverse landscapes. Whether you’re seeking tropical resort vibes or serenity in the woods, the Peninsula attracts a wide spectrum of visitors from within Japan and abroad.

Please note that the course is not closed; cyclists will ride on public roads without road closures.

Highlights
・Expect picturesque views on the course. You’ll swing by Instagram-worthy sightseeing spots worth “Ooh”ing and “Aah”ing over – but expect some huffing and puffing on each course. Bring your smartphone along and Instagram your journey (but not while pedaling)!
・Fuel your ride at aid stations offering a spread of local delicacies and snacks from the mountains and waters of the Izu Peninsula. Colorful and delicious, you can look forward to seafood, sweets, and local delicacies.
・Izu Ichi offers a handful of distances challenging everyone from the weekend warrior to the data-crunching champion cyclist. Climb mountains, ride along the coast, and admire the perfectly conically shaped (dormant) volcano, Mt. Omuro! Plenty of tough climbs but pedal forth steadfast!

50KM (+787m) / 31 miles (+2,582 ft)
Meet at Izu Kogen station and take the cycle train to the start point at Shimoda. Ride from Shimoda to Izu Kogen station. Beginners are welcome to explore some of the most beautiful parts of Izu solo or with friends – with plenty of time to save the day for other leisurely activities!
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆

85KM (+1,876m) / 63 miles (+6,155 ft)
Spectacular views of the west Izu Peninsula skyline await cyclists on the 85KM course. Of course, it takes a little bit of work to enjoy those kinds of views…prepare yourself for a steady 15KM grind uphill! Don’t let the distance fool you – but you’ll be glad you did it.
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆

160KM (+2,788m) / 100 miles (+9.147 ft)
Complete a century ride around Izu! Take in the views and enjoy the scenery…but prepare to put in a lot of watts conquering this course. A great century challenge for first-timers and the experienced, it’ll be a ride to remember.
Difficulty: ★★★★☆

200KM (+3,466m) / 124 miles (+11,371 ft)
Take the day to cycle around the Izu Peninsula! With a total ascent equal to that of scaling Mt. Fuji from sea to summit, this is a massive ride meant for serious cyclists. Fuel up at the Minami Izu aid station with a bento only for 200KM riders! Ride hard or easy, fast or slow – just finish by 1630 (about 10.5 hours).
Difficulty: ★★★★★

IMPORTANT
・This is not a race – there are no timing chips. No drafting, no peletons.
・Roads are not closed for this event. Izu Ichi is best for intermediate to advanced cyclists comfortable with sharing the roads. Be a responsible athlete – please consider whether you have the physical ability to complete the course in time.
・Participants may move about freely on the course as their pace dictates. However, participants should not be ahead of his/her group’s leading guide cyclist.
