about the race
By far one of the most bizarre races you’ll ever participate in, the Kakogawa Socks 5 or the KS5 is bound to make for a memorable weekend activity. Gather up your friends, family, or colleagues to make a 5-person team and hustle together for 30 meters – twice (more if you make the finals!).
Even better, KS5 takes place at a well-known temple and national treasure in the heart of Kakogawa City. Qualifiers will be held in an open area at Kakurjin-ji Park while the Totasan Kakurin-ji Temple will host the final battle for the championship.
For some, the KS5 and the words “centipede race” may conjure memories of possibly the worst movie known to mankind…but this is different, we promise! The Kakogawa Socks 5 Centipede Race is part crafts project and part athletic pursuit. From handcrafting the team band out of discarded sock fabric to aligning your footsteps just right to move forward, it’s a team activity that everyone can enjoy.
About Kakogawa Socks
Founded during the manufacturing boom in the Meiji era, Kakogawa Socks are carefully crafted in Hyogo Prefecture’s Kakogawa City. As a local business, Kakogawa Socks pride themselves on maintaining quality whilst demonstrating the highest handling volume of socks in the country. This year, Kakogawa Socks are excited to collaborate with the Hyogo Prefecture Socks Industrial Association, local business, regional attractions, and sports event organizers for the first edition of the Kakogawa Socks 5 Centipede Race.
To register, you will need the following information for all five team members: full name, gender, DOB, emergency contact name and phone number.

RACE RULES
Select or Craft Your Team Band
・Each team may either select a pre-made team band or create a team band. Generally speaking, each team is entitled up to two pre-made team bands.
・The team band links one member of the team to another in a single-file line
・The team band must be made out of discarded Kakogawa Socks fabric and is essentially several pieces of fabric tied together
・Not all sock fabric discards are equal! They vary in strength, color, stretchiness, and length – part of the art of creating a team band is choosing discards wisely!
・Practicing with your team band is important – make use of the practice time to coordinate strategies and tactics with your team
Qualifiers
・Each team will race the 30-meter time trial course twice; the better time will be used to determine qualification for finals
・Each time your team band snaps (or otherwise breaks apart), 3 seconds will be added to your time
・Timing mats used will record up to 1/2000 of a second
Finals
・The event organizers may enforce categories, such as all-male, all-female, mixed, senior, corporate
・Four teams will qualify for each category; two teams will play each other on a single-elimination (knock-out, sudden death) basis
・If both team band snaps (or otherwise breaks apart), the team with the fewer number of snaps/breaks wins.
・If both team band snaps (or otherwise breaks apart) the same amount of times, the team with the faster time wins.
・There will be no race to determine 3rd
・During the finals, the lead for both teams must wear the provided helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads.
・ Please ensure you have lodging and transportation plans figured out BEFORE registering for this event.
