about the ride

The Tour de Utsukushigahara Bicycle Race is a popular bike race taking place amidst the vast, green expanse of Nagano Prefecture’s Utsukushigahara Kogen (Utsukushighara Highlands). Considered one of Japan’s biggest hill climb races, the Tour is held in the early summer each year. Covering just under 22KM (about 13.5 miles) with an elevation gain of about 1,270 meters and boasting an average incline of 5.9%, the Tour de Utsukushigahara offers a brutally challenging course for cyclists of all levels.

Each year, approximately 2,000 cyclists start at the parking lot of Matsumoto Baseball Stadium, climb towards Asama Onsen, and finish at an elevation of about 2,000 meters at the Utsukushigahara Highlands. After the race, participants can opt to clean up and relax with a soak in the Asama Onsen hot springs.

Highlights
• Accessible from Matsumoto station, one of Nagano’s main stations frequented by shinkansen (plus, a bus from Shinjuku). Race packet collection and start are less than 5KM from Matsumoto station on easily navigable roads.
• Love a challenge? Nagano is a haven for cyclists and the Tour de Utsukushigahara offers the opportunity to learn a new route that will keep you coming back for more!
• Kick back and loosen up your legs at the Asama Onsen hot springs after the race
• Roads are closed to vehicular traffic for duration of race
• Most bikes and ages welcome – just make sure to read all of the details and remarks to be fully prepared
